More of a small-town police procedural than a campy summer slasher. The Summer Fun Massacre by Craig DiLouie has a fantastic hook, but it didn't quite deliver the high-energy slasher vibes I was hoping for. What worked: * Great opening: It throws you right into the brutal aftermath of a camp massacre. * Creepy folklore: The myth of the "Hungry Hare" adds a really cool folk-horror element. * Grounded protagonist: Deputy Tom Bailey is a solid, relatable lead character. What didn't work: * Misleading setting: The actual summer camp elements are pushed to the background very quickly. * Slow middle: The plot gets bogged down in repetitive, slow-moving police investigation work. * Frustrating ending: The finale leaves too many big questions unanswered regarding the killer's true nature. It is a well-written book with great atmosphere, but it lacks the pacing and active terror of a traditional slasher. Worth a read if you prefer slow-burn crime mysteries over gory horror.
